Why it's worth checking out
Kawana Surf Club is a restaurant, social venue and working surf life saving club in Kawana Waters, on the Sunshine Coast. Its dining setup is designed for different kinds of visits, with an indoor dining area, a spacious deck and a relaxed beer garden. Seating requests are welcome, although particular areas cannot be guaranteed because parts of the venue may be reserved for functions. The club’s position near one of the Sunshine Coast’s open beaches adds a distinctly coastal setting without taking away from its practical, community-focused character.
Food and drink are available across the club’s bistro, bar and bottleshop. The bistro offers a weekday lunch menu from 11.30am to 2pm, along with a monthly special and weekly specials. Bistro service runs during the day and evening on early weekdays, later on Fridays and Saturdays, and through to the evening on Sundays. The bar and bottleshop open from the morning, with later service on Fridays and Saturdays. For a low-key meal, a drink or an informal catch-up, the choice of indoor and outdoor areas gives visitors some flexibility.
The club also has a regular calendar of community events. Thursday mornings bring bingo, with food and drinks available for purchase, while Thursday evenings are given over to an all-ages trivia night. Surfie raffles run on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons, with proceeds directed to the local lifesaving service. Sunday membership draws are also held. These events make the venue particularly suited to groups, regulars and visitors looking for more than a standard restaurant meal; the all-ages trivia format can also work well for families and mixed-age groups.
Kawana Surf Club’s roots reach back to 1980, when the Kawana Apex Club began pursuing a local surf club after several tragic drownings. Volunteers first established a patrol shed before the clubhouse opened in 1982, and the organisation has since expanded alongside the growing Kawana community. The club continues to operate alongside its dining and functions business, with new reception and surf facilities now complete and further upgrades planned. Several function rooms and private bars are available for exclusive events, and the club promotes larger occasions such as its annual sports luncheon. A courtesy bus operates from Alexandra Headland to Wurtulla on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons, offering door-to-door transport for patrons who arrange it with the club. With a Google rating of 4.2 from more than 1,000 reviews, it is an established choice for casual dining, social events and community-minded visits on the Sunshine Coast.
