Noosa Shire Museum

Noosa Shire Museum offers a detailed look at the history of the Noosa region from its home at 29 Factory Street, Pomona. Founded by the Cooroora Historical Society in 1985, the museum opened in the former Noosa Shire Council Chambers and was created to preserve local history and make it accessible to residents and visitors.

The collection contains more than 5,000 items donated largely by local people. Displays cover the region from ancient times through to the recent past, with material including farming implements, war relics and historical photographs. Visitors can also explore a library of books about the Noosa Shire, newspapers dating from the early 20th century, photographs and other historical records. The museum’s family-history resources include files on numerous local families, with enquiries free, although research work and photocopying incur fees.

A strong part of the museum’s work is its audio-visual and oral-history program. Its Capturing the Past series shares recollections from local people, including stories about early settlement, family life, regional towns and significant events such as the opening of Doonella Bridge in 1929. The museum also publishes feature videos through its YouTube channel and invites people with relevant memories, family histories or stories connected to museum items to contribute their experiences.

The museum suits visitors who want to explore the Sunshine Coast beyond its more recent attractions, as well as families, school groups, tour groups, local-history researchers and solo visitors with time to browse. It also takes part in community events and hosts occasional programs, including a 2025 evening featuring live music and an outdoor film screening. General admission is free. From 1 July 2025, the museum is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am to 3pm, with other visits available by arrangement for groups of 10 or more.
