Sunshine Coast Railway Modelers Society

Sunshine Coast Railway Modellers Society offers a close-up miniature railway experience in Marcoola for members and the general public. The society operates steam, electric and petrol locomotives on a dual-gauge track, giving visitors the chance to watch trains travel through a landscaped park rather than simply viewing a static model display. The railway runs at ground level and across two main levels, creating a longer and more varied journey through the site.

A standout feature is the section crossing Namba Creek and continuing down to the Petrie Creek flats, around three metres below the station floor. The bridge sits above the creek, while mature trees help divide the upper and lower areas visually. From the pedestrian over-bridge, visitors can look down onto the tracks, wave to passengers and watch locomotives working up the long climb from the creek flats. The site also has several viewing points suited to both close-up and longer-distance train watching and photography.

The park is set up for more than railway viewing. Open grassy areas provide room for family and group picnics, making it a practical outing for families, larger groups and anyone who enjoys spending time outdoors. Visitors can choose their own vantage point around the track, while train enthusiasts may appreciate the details of the locomotives, bridge and track layout. The combination of moving trains, open space and elevated views gives the venue a relaxed, hands-on feel without requiring visitors to be railway experts.

The track first opened in November 1980 and has been extended and upgraded over the years, including the addition of the Roy Stephens Loop in 1999 and later works across Namba Creek and onto the Petrie Creek flats. The society also welcomes new members, particularly young people. Owning a locomotive is not required: training is provided to use the club's locomotives and to take part in different aspects of railway operation. For visitors to Marcoola and the wider Sunshine Coast, it is a distinctive family activity with a substantial local history and plenty of space to watch, photograph and enjoy miniature trains.
