Yandina Historic House combines a local history museum, visitor information centre, art gallery and craft room at 3 Pioneer Road, Yandina, on the Sunshine Coast. The museum presents historical displays about the district, while the visitor centre can help with directions, local sights, businesses and history research. Visitors can also pick up a brochure for the Yandina Heritage Trail, a 26-site walk through the town’s past that takes several hours to complete.
The house itself has a story worth exploring. Built at Bridges around 1899–1900 by pioneer John Gustave Sommer as a family home, it was first named Tillstead after his wife’s birthplace in Denmark. Later known as Kenaldare, it passed through several owners and housed three generations of the Williams family. In 1996, the property was resumed for the new Bruce Highway and relocated to its current site, where it was restored with help from the Maroochy Shire Council and SkillCentred. The Yandina & District Historical Society took over the lease in 2003, and volunteers have kept the house open to the public since then.
The venue also offers a community-focused gallery supporting local artists. Exhibitions include two-dimensional work such as paintings, drawings, photography, eco prints and fabric art, alongside three-dimensional pieces including glass, ceramics, weaving, metalwork and mosaics. Artists change regularly, and some may accept commissions, making the gallery relevant both to visitors browsing for a Sunshine Coast-made gift and to people looking for original work for their home.
A visit can be paired with Devonshire tea, coffee or a light lunch in the parkland setting, giving the experience an easy, unhurried feel. The venue is run by volunteers from the not-for-profit historical society, whose aim is to research, preserve and share local history with the community. It should suit solo visitors, heritage enthusiasts, art lovers and small groups looking for a gentle cultural stop in Yandina. The Historic House, Art Gallery and Craft Room are open on weekdays from 9:30am to 2:30pm, while the museum operates from 10am to 1pm; the site is closed on weekends and public holidays.
Spot Score
The Spot Score is our composite of five signals — two about the venue's standing with visitors and three about how complete and current this listing is. It is not a visitor rating and not a verdict on the food or the experience. The 4.5 from 165 reviews is Google's visitor rating, shown separately and never altered by us.
