Why it's worth checking out

Sunshine Castle is a family attraction and functions venue in Coolum Beach on the Sunshine Coast, built around a medieval-style castle with an unusual history. The site describes it as Australia’s biggest castle, although visitors now explore a smaller, re-routed experience after several of the original buildings were closed because of their age. Parts of the structure remain authentically in ruins, adding an atmospheric backdrop for photographs around the turrets, towers and drawbridge.

The current mini tour leads through the castle courtyard, where visitors can see medieval displays, armour and history shields explaining elements of the building and the medieval era. Children and the young at heart can take part in a treasure hunt, with a reward from the King’s Treasure Chest, and themed headwear is available for dress-up fun. The tour also includes dancing dolls, a Castles of the World gallery, the renovated All Dolled Up doll museum, the Fairytale Walk and a model train. The mix of history, theatrical displays and imaginative details makes it suited to families, school-holiday outings and visitors who enjoy unusual local museums.

Dolls and fairytales are central to the castle’s story. It began in 1972 when Scottish couple Ian and Marcia Hayne built a medieval-style castle to house fairytale dioramas and dolls. The attraction later expanded to include medieval armour, a doll museum and other displays, changing names from Fairytale Castle to Bli Bli Castle before becoming Sunshine Castle. The Dancing Dolls, national costumes and fairytale displays remain part of that heritage, while the refreshed doll museum gives the collection a more contemporary setting. The castle’s history also includes a shift towards weddings, functions, corporate events and special programs, including collaborations with entertainers and educators.

There is more to the venue than the tour. The castle houses Absolut Toys and Collectibles, an independent toy store focused on quality toys sourced from Australia, Europe and elsewhere, along with the Castle Coffee Shop. Groups can use the venue for functions and events, while families can combine the courtyard, displays and treasure hunt with time in the toy store. For visitors travelling alone or as a couple, the castle offers a compact museum-style experience with plenty of visual detail and a distinctive sense of place; for families, the interactive elements provide a more hands-on way to engage with its history. Sunshine Castle has a Google rating of 3.8 from 974 reviews.
