Maroochy Wetland Sanctuary

Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary is a peaceful nature reserve on the banks of the Maroochy River at Bli Bli on the Sunshine Coast. Its main attraction is a 900-metre elevated boardwalk that winds through the wetland towards the river, offering an easy, level walk without steps or hills. The raised path provides changing views of the sanctuary’s wet eucalypt forest, melaleuca forest, casuarina woodland, mangroves and salt marsh, with seats along the way for pauses and quiet observation.

This is a strong choice for wildlife and environment lovers. The wetlands support more than 200 bird species, along with crabs, butterflies, reptiles, fish and other wildlife adapted to an environment shaped by seasonal freshwater flooding and salty tides. Waterbirds and crabs are among the animals visitors may spot, while trail signs and the interactive visitor information centre add context to the landscape. A newer audio trail along the boardwalk also shares wetland stories and nature sounds, giving the walk an extra layer of interest without making it feel overly structured.

The sanctuary suits a wide range of visitors, including families with prams, people using wheelchairs, solo walkers and anyone looking for a calm outdoor outing. It can work well for a slow-paced group visit, with plenty to notice along the route, or as a restorative walk for people who prefer listening and observing rather than seeking a strenuous hike. The council recommends visiting during daylight hours in the cooler winter months, when mosquito numbers are lower. Guided citizen science walks and school holiday activities are also offered at various times, with updates available through Eventbrite.

The place has a deeper story beyond its plants and wildlife. It forms part of First Nations cultural heritage stretching back more than 60,000 years, and its ongoing care is supported by council staff, volunteers and the Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary Support Group. Volunteers help welcome visitors, guide educational tours, contribute to biodiversity research and support community education, including work connected with the ClimateWatch trail. The support group also runs themed walks, guest-speaker sessions and a Bird Observers group, reflecting the sanctuary’s role as both a public walking space and an important community-supported wetland.
