Buderim-Palmwoods Heritage Tramway Walk

The Buderim-Palmwoods Heritage Tramway Walk follows part of the old tramway easement off Mons Road, offering an easy way to explore a lesser-known chapter of Buderim and the Sunshine Coast’s development. The track once connected Palmwoods with the Buderim Mountain township, carrying both produce and passengers between 1914 and 1935. Today, the surviving route provides a tangible link to the railway that helped establish Buderim as a major fruit-growing area and opened the region to visitors and future development.

The heritage trail is approximately 4km return and takes about 1.5 hours to complete. It is described as an easy, enjoyable stroll suitable for all ages, including seniors, and is wheelchair accessible. Along the way, walkers can see remnants of the original construction, including sleepers that have remained in place for more than a century. The trail also includes rare native moss, adding a small natural detail to an outing that is primarily focused on local history and engineering.

A brochure with a detailed map is available at the start of the track, and a printable map covers both the main trail and a second walking route through Buderim Mountain Village. That village walk traces locations where the tramway once ran when it was a prominent part of life on the mountain. Visitors who want more context can request a guided walk from the heritage group for a small donation. Volunteer guides share stories about the community’s efforts in the early 1900s to establish the line, as well as the engineering involved in building it across the landscape.

The walk is a practical, self-guided outing for families, history-minded visitors, solo walkers and small groups looking for a purposeful local stroll. The meeting point is at the sign reading “Buderim Palmwoods Heritage Tramway Walk” on the corner of Telco Road and Mons Road, with a car park on Telco Road. There are no toilets available at the track, so visitors should plan accordingly. The trail forms part of the broader work of Buderim-Palmwoods Heritage Tramway Inc, a volunteer organisation formed in 2003 to preserve the area’s railway history and restore the Krauss locomotive. The group’s restoration and display project gives the walk added context, connecting the remaining track evidence with the locomotive and the community’s long-running preservation efforts.
