Why it's worth checking out
Kondalilla Falls is a rainforest walk in Kondalilla National Park near Montville, with a 90-metre waterfall, subtropical forest and rock pools as its main drawcards. The classic Kondalilla Falls Circuit is a 4.8-kilometre return track graded moderate, winding down through dense rainforest to the base of the falls. Allow around two to three hours, including time to take in the valley lookouts, listen for birds in the canopy and pause along the way. The route includes about 300 stairs, so sturdy footwear and a reasonable level of fitness are worthwhile. Swimmers may be useful if you want to cool off in the park’s rock pools, although conditions can vary.
For a shorter visit, the 1.7-kilometre Picnic Creek Circuit takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour and offers broad views across the hinterland valley. It is described as an easier option for families or anyone after a lighter walk. The picnic area and lookout are accessible, but the full circuit is not wheelchair accessible because of its steep terrain and stairs. Picnic and barbecue facilities are available near the car park, making the park suitable for a relaxed daytime outing as well as a more active hike.
The landscape has a long natural history, shaped by volcanic activity around 28 million years ago. The park now protects remnants of subtropical rainforest and open eucalypt forest once widespread across the Blackall Range. Kondalilla means “rushing waters” in the local Aboriginal language, a fitting name as the waterfall runs through the forested setting. Nature is a major part of the experience, with more than 100 bird species, around 70 reptile species and over 30 frog species recorded in the park. Visitors may also notice strangler figs, fungi after rain and, occasionally, a lace monitor on the track.
Kondalilla Falls suits solo walkers, couples, families and small groups who are comfortable with a bush track and changing terrain. A car is recommended because public transport is limited, and the car park can fill quickly on weekends and during school holidays. Before setting out, check current park alerts and track conditions, as weather and maintenance may lead to temporary closures or changes. Spring and summer can be a good choice for visitors hoping to see the falls flowing strongly, while the park can be visited throughout the year. The walk is in Montville on the Sunshine Coast, close to the hinterland’s other villages, lookouts and local attractions.
Spot Score
The Spot Score is our composite of five signals — two about the venue's standing with visitors and three about how complete and current this listing is. It is not a visitor rating and not a verdict on the food or the experience. The 4.8 from 116 reviews is Google's visitor rating, shown separately and never altered by us.
